World Cup Fever: A Lesson Learned

Sometimes things go your way, but when they don't, how you handle them says everything about who you are. Here at RapidStudio, we’re all about football this month, rekindling the spirit of hosting the 2010 games and diving headfirst into this year’s World Cup fever—minus the hosting nation hype.

Vuvuzelas, Flags, and a Little Mischief

On opening day, we brought out our flags and vuvuzelas to “serenade” the neighbouring offices. Around lunchtime, we paused our work to engage in a front plaza spectacle of flag-flying revelry and playful patriotism for countries most of us have never even visited. A few group photos and tweeted selfies later, we returned to the grind with lighter hearts and ringing ears. (Apologies to anyone who tried to reach us during the razzle!)

The Office Draw

Later, we held a draw where everyone picked a team to support. Hopes were high to avoid being saddled with an underdog. Petunia, in a random stroke of “luck,” drew Brazil—the much-coveted team—leading to laughter and skeptical grins all around.

I drew Croatia. Not knowing much about soccer, I stayed up late to watch their opening match against Brazil. Croatia managed to secure an early goal (thanks to Brazil’s generosity), only to have their rears handed to them by the Brazilian powerhouse. The next morning, I found Petunia to congratulate her on her team’s win and laugh about the match’s peculiarities.

A Surprising Connection

Though I’ve never been interested in soccer or understood the money, passion, and patriotism tied to it, I found myself swept up in the camaraderie and excitement. Supporting a team—even one you drew by chance—has a funny way of sparking optimism and connection.

Here’s to Soccer

Here’s to the World Cup, to optimism, patriotism, and camaraderie. Here’s to the opportunity it brings to bond with colleagues, have a laugh, and support something larger than ourselves.

Croatia for the WIN! And good luck to the other teams who, well, aren’t going to win. Sorry, ne.
