Mandela Day: Making a Difference with RapidStudio

The celebration of Mandela Day serves as a global call to action, inspiring people everywhere to "recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better."

"Mr Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place. We're asking you for 67 minutes."

Why Mandela Day?

Every year on 18 July – Nelson Mandela’s birthday – we’re called to act on the idea that **each person has the power to change the world**. Inspired by his words during his 90th birthday celebrations in 2008 at London’s Hyde Park, Mandela said:

"It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now."

The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009. This day recognises Mandela’s values, dedication to humanity, and his contributions to democracy and a culture of peace.

RapidStudio’s Mandela Day Effort – Cleaning Up Our Neighbourhood

For Mandela Day 2016, the RapidStudio team rolled up our sleeves and got down and dirty – quite literally! Johannesburg, our home city, is vibrant and full of life, but our neighbourhood in the inner city struggles with a significant litter problem.

Scrap sellers, unfinished public works, and pedestrians have left our pavements and sidewalks in disarray, strewn with rubbish and debris. For Mandela Day, our team decided to take the first bold step toward restoring our corner of Johannesburg.

What We Achieved

Our incredible team – Mike, Steven, Modise, Paul, Petunia, Sherie Ann, Jaco, Petros, Jackson, Marius, Orbit, Patricia, Lenah – braved challenging conditions to clean up a neglected strip of pavement.

  • We faced urine-soaked sidewalks and mountains of trash.
  • Sherrie Van Greune and Jaco Van Greune were hard at work shovelling and organising the litter.
  • We tamed the chaos into manageable heaps ready for a skip to collect and remove the rubbish.

Although the work isn’t over – we know it will take another full day to completely clear this strip – we’re proud of what we achieved as a team. By cleaning up our neighbourhood, we’ve taken the first step toward creating a cleaner, safer space for everyone. It’s all about leaving a positive imprint, just as Mandela inspired us to do.

Make Mandela Day Count

Mandela Day reminds us that even small efforts can make a big difference. Whether it’s 67 minutes or a full day, find a cause that speaks to your heart and contribute to creating a better world.

Here at RapidStudio, we’re committed to continuing this journey. If you’re looking for inspiration, consider starting small in your own neighbourhood. Every little bit helps!

As Mandela once said:

"What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead."
